The Rams: How soon we forget

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

As the St. Louis Rams run roughshod through the league as well as the NFL record books, there are those who feel Mike Martz's club has a shot of going undefeated, something we haven't seen since those fabled 1972 Miami Dolphins.

Torry Holt and the Rams are putting up amazing numbers on offense.
Yes, it's the Rams we're talking about. The same St. Louis Rams who entered the '99 season with the worst record of the decade.

How soon we forget just how bad this franchise had become. From 1990-98, the Rams were a combined 45-99. Over the last two seasons, including their playoff run and Super Bowl XXXIV victory, they're an amazing 22-3 and this season are 6-0 for the second consecutive year. From 1990-98, the Rams won more than six games in a season (7-9 in 1995) only once.

If you look at their regular season numbers alone since 1999, St. Louis has been staggering--winning more games and scoring as many touchdowns as their previous three seasons combined.

Rams: 1999-00 vs. 1996-98 (Regular season)
Seasons Games Rec. Pts. scored TDs
1999-00 22 19-3 788 98
1996-98 48 15-33 887 98

And forgetting the 1999 championship campaign for a moment, look at the Rams' awesome numbers this season compared to the season totals of their first nine years of the 1990s.

Rams: 1990-98 and 2000 (Regular season)
Season Rec. Pts. scored TDs
2000 6-0 262 32
1998 4-12 285 32
1997 5-11 299 32
1996 6-10 303 34
1995 7-9 309 37
1994 4-12 286 33
1993 5-11 221 25
1992 6-10 313 38
1991 3-13 234 26
1990 5-11 345 43

St. Louis has already scored as many or more touchdowns this season than in four of those nine campaigns (1991 '93, '97 and '98), and more points than in two of those seasons (1991 and '93).

True, the Rams' impressive ride could hit a road bump this week at Kansas City. In any case, this is a franchise that continues to amaze and has put a lot of bad memories behind it in a huge hurry.
