Baxter Bits: Chiefs at Colts

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Chiefs make their way to the RCA Dome to face the Colts, playing their third consecutive home game for the first time since 1990 and only the second time ever, as these teams collide for just the fourth time (including playoffs) in the 1990s.

Including playoffs, while these teams have split their previous 12 meetings, the Colts have prevailed in the last three encounters (including a 10-7 upset of the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in the 1995 AFC Divisional Playoffs), the most recent regular-season clash resulting in a 24-19 victory at Kansas City in 1996.

While the Chiefs own a respectable 3-2 regular-season road record in this infrequent series (3-1 at Baltimore, 0-1 at Indianapolis), their lone previous visit to the RCA Dome resulted in a 23-19 loss in 1990.

Numbers: Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs' quarterbacks have thrown 96 touchdown passes compared to just 30 interceptions in 69 victories, while throwing just 34 TD passes and 60 interceptions in 40 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have totaled 71 takeaways in 25 wins, 19 takeaways in 15 losses dating back to '97. They have forced two or more turnovers in eight straight games dating back to '98. The Chiefs have totaled two or more interceptions in six straight games, and have limited the opposition to 14 or fewer points in three straight games.

After throwing just three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his first four games, Colts QB Peyton Manning has thrown 37 TD passes and 25 interceptions in his last 19 contests dating back to '98, throwing two or more touchdown passes in 12 of his last 18 games. However, Manning has thrown two or more interceptions in eight of his last 16 contests. Manning has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 20 straight games dating back to '98. After allowing an AFC-high 62 sacks in 16 games in 1997, the Colts have allowed just 26 sacks in their last 23 games dating back to '98. After allowing 11 sacks in their first four games in 1998, the Colts have allowed just 15 sacks in their last 19 contests, giving up zero sacks in 11 of those 19 contests. They have allowed 80 points in five wins, 65 points in two losses in '99.

Things to look for: The Chiefs come off a pair of imposing victories, but their defense will get its toughest test to date as Colts' young three-headed offensive monster will present Gunther Cunningham's hard-hitting defenders with plenty to think about. And since Indianapolis' revamped defense is starting to round into form, Jim Mora's rising club is getting ready to the AFC East race very interesting.

Etc.: The Colts are 5-2 for the first time since 1996, when they finished 9-7 and last qualified for the playoffs (a 42-14 loss at Pittsburgh in the 1996 AFC Wild Card Game) under since-departed head coach Lindy Infante. The Chiefs and Colts have each won three straight games.
