The Giants make their first regular-season appearance in Foxboro since 1990 as these interconference rivals square off in the regular season for just the sixth time ever. While the Giants own a 3-2 advantage in the series standings, the Patriots rallied for a 23-22 Saturday afternoon triumph at East Rutherford in 1996 in the last encounter between these clubs. New York owns a 1-1 road record in this setting, their lone previous regular-season visit to Foxboro resulting in a 13-10 victory in 1990. Numbers: Since 1996 (including playoffs), the Giants have committed just 22 turnovers in 25 wins, 61 turnovers in 25 losses and a tie. The Giants have scored 227 points and committed just seven turnovers in nine wins, while scoring just 98 points and committing 21 turnovers in nine losses dating back to '98. The Giants have forced 26 turnovers and totaled 37 sacks in nine wins, while totaling just five takeaways and 19 sacks in nine losses dating back to '98. Including playoffs, the Patriots have totaled 55 takeaways in 22 wins, 20 takeaways in 15 losses dating back to '97. Things To Look For:While Jim Fassel might be known as an offensive whiz, it was his usually-staunch defensive unit that was humbled at home last week against the potent Redskins' attack, which ran and threw at will. And the Giants could be in for more of the same against a Patriots aerial attack that is firing on all cylinders behind red-hot QB Drew Bledsoe, who looks like the best quarterback in the league these days. Etc.: The Patriots are 2-0 for the second time in three seasons (1997-99) and just the fifth time in the team's 40-year history (1960-99). Including playoffs, the Giants are 12-4-1 vs. NFC East opponents and just 7-11 (0-1 in playoffs) vs. the rest of the NFL under head coach Jim Fassel (1997-99). The Giants are just 6-10 vs. AFC teams dating back to 1995 (3-1 in '98). The Patriots are 8-26 lifetime vs. NFC East competition. Including Super Bowl XXXI, the Patriots are 11-26 vs. NFC competition since '89 (2-2 in '98). |
