The Chiefs head west to the Kingdome as Seahawks are in position to sweep this lopsided series for the first time since 1990. Five weeks ago at Arrowhead Stadium (Week 11), Seahawks RB Ricky Watters ran for 107 yards and scored three touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving) and the Seattle defense limited the Chiefs to just 76 yards rushing as the 'Hawks won at Kansas City for the first time since 1990, 31-19. Despite this season's earlier loss, the Chiefs have nearly doubled the 'Hawks in the win column (27-15) and have really dominated this rivalry as of late, prevailing in 14 of the last 17 meetings between the clubs dating back to 1991. As for the Chiefs' last appearance at the Kingdome (Week 10 of '98), Watters ran for 105 yards and a pair of touchdown and LB Darrin Smith returned an Elvis Grbac interception 26 yards for a score as Seattle jumped out to a 24-6 halftime lead on their way to a 24-12 win, snapping a 7-game losing streak in this series. Despite last season's setback, Kansas City is 10-10 lifetime at the Kingdome, including 6-2 in their last 8 visits to Seattle dating back to 1991. Numbers: In their last 15 games vs. the Seahawks (1992-99), Chiefs' defense/special teams have scored seven touchdowns (2 interceptions, 1 fumble return, 1 punt return, 1 blocked punt for TD, 2 kickoff returns) and blocked a punt for a safety. The Chiefs are an NFL-best plus-23 (43-20) in turnover differential in 1999, and an astounding league-best plus-130 (363-233) in turnover differential in the 1990s. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have scored 786 points in 29 wins, 264 points in 18 losses dating back to '97. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs' quarterbacks have thrown 102 touchdown passes compared to just 33 interceptions in 73 victories, while throwing just 36 TD passes and 62 interceptions in 43 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have totaled 83 takeaways in 29 wins, 28 takeaways in 18 losses dating back to '97. The Chiefs have totaled 27 sacks in nine wins, six sacks in five losses in '99. TE Tony Gonzalez has scored at least one touchdown in four straight games. They have rushed for 170 or more yards in 3 straight games. Since 1996, the Seahawks have allowed 140 or more yards rushing in 23-of-62 games, 180-plus yards rushing in nine of those contests. QB Jon Kitna has thrown five touchdown passes and eight interceptions in his last four games (0-4), after 16 TD passes and just six interceptions in his first nine contests (7-2) in '99. The Seahawks have committed 14 turnovers in their last four games (0-4), this after committing 17 turnovers in their first 10 contests (8-2) in '99. They have committed two or more turnovers in eight straight games. Since 1996, the Seahawks have given up 502 points in 31 wins (16.2 PPG), 811 points in 31 losses (26.2 PPG).
Things to look for: With an opportunistic defense that continues to make plays and a safe ball-control attack that makes very few mistakes, the Chiefs have rebounded from a midseason slump and are now in position to win the AFC West with a victory, pretty amazing considering Gunther Cunningham's club was seemingly out of the race about a month ago. But Mike Holmgren's slumping team won't go quietly. Etc.: The Chiefs have won four straight games. The Seahawks have lost four straight games. The Seahawks are 19-44 vs. divisional competition since 1992 (3-4 in '99). Chiefs WR Andre Rison (699) needs one catch to become the 12th player in NFL history with 700 career receptions. Seahawks RB Ricky Watters (8,990) needs 10 yards to become the 14th player in NFL history with 9,000 career rushing yards. |
