Baxter Bits: Jaguars at Browns

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Jaguars head north to Cleveland Browns Stadium looking to remain perfect in this AFC Central series.

Nine weeks ago at ALLTEL Stadium (Week 6), Jaguars QB Jay Fielder (replacing an injured Mark Brunell) gave Tom Coughlin's team the lead in the third quarter with an 8-yard touchdown pass to TE Kyle Brady (the pair also combining on a two-point conversion) and the Jacksonville defense shut out the Browns in the second half as the Jags posted a 24-7 win.

The Jaguars own a 3-0 lead in the series standings, prevailing in this year's earlier battle and both meetings during their debut season in the NFL in '95.

The Jaguars posted a 23-15 victory in 1995 in their only previous trip to Cleveland.

Numbers: After gaining a franchise-low 132 total yards in a 6-3 victory over the Ravens in Week 10, the Jaguars have totaled 1,613 yards (403.3 YPG) and scored 118 points in their last 4 contests (4-0). In their first four seasons in the NFL (1995-98), Jaguars held an opponent without an offensive touchdown just three times in 64 games (3-of-70, including playoffs). In '99, the Jaguars have not allowed an offensive touchdown in 5-of-13 contests. Including playoffs, the Jaguars have seen a player gain 100 or more yards rushing in 13 of their last 31 games dating back to 1998, more than doubling the number of 100-yard rushing performances (5) that the Jaguars managed in the regular- and postseason combined (5) during their first three years in the NFL (1995-97). Including playoffs, the Jaguars have forced 57 turnovers in 24 wins, eight turnovers in seven losses dating back to '98. They have allowed 135 points in 12 wins, 20 points in one loss in '99. The Jaguars have totaled 48 sacks in 13 games in '99, this after totaling just 30 sacks in 16 games in '98. They have totaled three or more sacks in 10-of-13 contests in '99. The Jaguars have limited the opposition to 10 or fewer points in 8-of-13 contests in '99. They have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in three straight games and 10-of-13 contests in '99. They have committed eight turnovers in 12 wins, four turnovers in one loss in '99.

The Browns have allowed 200 or more yards rushing in 6-of-14 contests in '99. Their offense has scored 22 touchdowns in 14 games in '99, eight by rookie WR Kevin Johnson. The Browns have scored 175 points in 14 games in '99, 48 by Johnson. The Browns have forced seven turnovers in two wins but have totaled just 11 takeaways in 12 losses in '99. They have been limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing in eight straight games. The Browns have committed two or more turnovers in six straight games. They have been limited to 17 or fewer points in 11-of-14 contests in '99.

Things to look for: Tom Coughlin's club continues to prove it can win no matter the situation as they rallied in the rain for a victory over the Broncos. And Jaguars' RB Fred Taylor figures to have a huge afternoon against a spent Cleveland defense that has been horrible against the run all season. It's highly doubtful that Browns' rookie QB Tim Couch will have much time to find WR Kevin Johnson.

Etc.: The Jaguars are in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season and have won 12 games during the regular season for the first time ever. They are 12-1 for the first time ever and have won 10 straight games for the first time in the team's 5-year history (1995-99). The Jaguars have won six straight road games. Including playoffs, the Jaguars are 50-33 in their 83-game history (1995-99), including 27-12 vs. the AFC Central. They are 39-11 in their last 50 regular-season games (42-14, including playoffs) dating back to 1996, this after managing just an 8-19 record in their first 27 contests dating back to their debut season in 1995.

The Browns have lost four straight games.
