Baxter Bits: Vikings at Chiefs

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Vikings make their first regular-season appearance at Arrowhead Stadium since 1990 as these interconference foes square off once again.

Including postseason, the Chiefs own a one-game edge (4-3) in the series standings, the difference being Kansas City's 23-7 victory in Super Bowl IV at Tulane Stadium.

The Clubs have split their six previous regular-season battles, the Chiefs posting a 21-6 win at the Metrodome in 1996 in the last encounter between the teams.

The Vikings are 1-1 in 2 previous appearances at Arrowhead Stadium, their last visit to Kansas City resulting in a 24-21 loss in 1990.

Numbers: Vikings WR Cris Carter has scored at least one touchdown in seven straight games and 33 of his last 49 regular-season contests dating back to '96. Since 1996, the Vikings have 97 takeaways in 40 wins, 21 takeaways in 20 losses in 60 regular-season contests. After scoring at least 24 points in each of their 18 games (including playoffs) in 1998, the Vikings have been limited to 23 or fewer points in 8-of-12 contests in '99. They have allowed 11 sacks and committed just 10 turnovers in seven wins, while committing 19 turnovers and allowing 20 sacks in five losses in '99. The Vikings have 17 takeaways in seven wins, five takeaways in five losses in '99. The Vikings have forced two or more turnovers in six straight games, and have committed two or more turnovers in four straight games.

The Chiefs are an NFL-best plus-17 (35-18) in turnover differential in 1999, and an astounding league-best plus-124 (355-231) in turnover differential in the 1990s. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have scored 720 points in 27 wins, 264 points in 18 losses dating back to '97. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs quarterbacks have thrown 98 touchdown passes compared to just 33 interceptions in 71 victories, while throwing just 36 TD passes and 62 interceptions in 43 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have totaled 75 takeaways in 27 wins, 28 takeaways in 18 losses dating back to '97. They have totaled 21 sacks in seven wins, six sacks in five losses in '99.

Things to look for: The Vikings' offense was harassed into near-submission by the aggressive Bucs' defense, and Dennis Green's club could be in for more of the same against a Kansas City unit that can be just as effective, especially within the confines of raucous Arrowhead Stadium. But it's doubtful that the Chiefs' ultra-conservative attack can take advantage of Minnesota's problem-plagued secondary

Etc.: The Vikings are 20-11 vs. AFC teams under head coach Dennis Green dating back to 1992 (2-1 in '99). WR Cris Carter (114) needs two touchdowns to tie John Riggins (116) for 6th place on the NFL's all-time touchdowns scored list.

Since 1989, Chiefs are 30-11 vs. NFC teams (1-2 in '99). Chiefs WR Andre Rison (697) needs 2 catches to tie Gary Clark (699) for 12th place on the NFL's all-time receptions list. Rison (697) needs three catches to become the 12th player in NFL history with 700 career receptions.
