The Chiefs head to Oakland looking to continue their recent dominance in this fierce AFC West rivalry. The Chiefs now own a 41-37-2 edge in this rivalry (including a 2-1 mark in playoff competition), due mainly to the fact that Kansas City has won four straight and are 17-2 vs. the Silver and Black since 1990 (including 1-0 in playoffs). Last season, the Chiefs swept this series for the seventh time in nine years. On opening day on a Sunday night (ESPN) at Arrowhead Stadium (Week 1), Kansas City came up with 5 Raiders' turnovers and Chiefs LB Derrick Thomas totaled six of his team's 10 sacks on the evening as the Chiefs jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead enroute to a 28-8 triumph. Three months later on a Saturday afternoon at Oakland (Week 17), Chiefs RB Bam Morris rushed for 96 yards and a pair of scores, but it was QB Elvis Grbac's 20-yard touchdown pass to TE Tony Gonzalez with 5:56 to play that broke a 24-all tie as Kansas City overcame an early 14-0 deficit and rallied for a 31-24 triumph. The Chiefs are 7-2 in their last nine road tilts in this series (3-1 at Oakland, 4-1 at Los Angeles) dating back to 1990.
Numbers: The Chiefs are an NFL-best plus-17 (31-14) in turnover differential in 1999, and an astounding league-best plus-124 (351-227) in turnover differential in the 1990s. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs quarterbacks have thrown 96 touchdown passes compared to just 30 interceptions in 69 victories, while throwing just 36 TD passes and 62 interceptions in 43 defeats. Including playoffs, the Chiefs have scored 667 points in 25 wins, 264 points in 18 losses dating back to '97. Including playoffs, they have totaled 71 takeaways in 25 wins, 28 takeaways in 18 losses dating back to '97. The Chiefs have forced two or more turnovers in 11 straight games dating back to '98. After committing just 14 turnovers in their first eight games (6-2) in 1998, the Raiders have committed 48 turnovers in their last 18 contests (7-11). After allowing just 175 points in their first 10 games in 1998 (7-3), the Raiders have allowed 370 points in their last 16 games (6-10)
Things to look for: Both the Chiefs and Raiders know that if either club has playoff aspirations, a win here is essential just to stay in the AFC's postseason sweepstakes. Kansas City's pass rush has disappeared in recent weeks, but has a habit of getting back on track against Oakland's inconsistent offensive front. Can ex-Chief/turned Raiders' QB Rich Gannon end the Silver and Black's misery in this setting?. Etc.: The Chiefs have lost three straight games. PK Pete Stoyanovich (261) needs three field goals to tie Lou Groza (264) for 16th place on the NFL's all-time field goals list. After opening 7-3 under head coach Jon Gruden, the Raiders are 6-10 in their last 16 games dating back to '98. The Raiders own a 105-44-3 record (115-46-3, including playoffs) at the Oakland Coliseum, this compared to a 64-36 mark (69-38, including playoffs) at the L.A. Coliseum from 1982-94. WR Tim Brown has caught at least one pass in 102 straight games. |
