Titans turn it around

By Teresa M. Walker
Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans are banged up, have trouble with penalties and are just getting their running game going. They also know how to win.

Eddie George
Eddie George topped 100 yards for the first time this season, rushing for 155 yards on 28 carries at New Orleans.
The Titans enter this week's bye at 5-1 and tied with Jacksonville atop the AFC Central thanks to four second-half rallies. It's a big change for a team that specialized in finding ways to lose last season in going 8-8.

Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday that the comebacks have given the Titans, who play host to the St. Louis Rams on Oct. 31, a big boost of confidence.

"You don't go in the locker room at halftime upset when you go in trailing," he said. "You just overcome, and that's what we've been able to do.

"With the sense of confidence, it's easy for me to stand in front of them in the locker room and say, 'We've come back the last three in a row.' They say, 'You're right.' "

The Titans would be 6-0 if another comeback attempt hadn't failed in Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers. They had a chance to tie the score, only to have a two-point conversion stopped short of the goal.

Tennessee rallied from nine points down to beat Cincinnati in the opener and trailed by 10 points before defeating Jacksonville in Week 3. The deficit was just two against Baltimore, but the Titans were down by 10 to New Orleans last week before rallying for a 24-21 win.

The victories, however, haven't been pretty. The Titans were penalized for a NFL-record 212 yards against Baltimore, and they lead the league with 530 penalty yards. Only Chicago has two more penalties at 53.

Fisher said that's the way the NFL is today.

"Everyone's experience level is higher. There's so much parity with teams that anything can happen," he said. "It's hard to win, extremely hard to win in this league with teams matched up the way they are."

At least the Titans' running game is getting on track. Eddie George ended a string of 12 straight games without topping 100 yards rushing Sunday when he carried the ball 28 times for 155 yards.

That performance moved the Titans from worst in the NFL to 24th in rushing offense.

Fisher said the key has been the way players have stepped up when someone is injured. Neil O'Donnell has led the Titans to a 4-1 record since quarterback Steve McNair needed surgery to repair a disc in his back.

The Titans also have lost their starting left guard for the season, defensive tackle Mike Jones has missed two games after arthroscopic surgery and Pro Bowl safety Blaine Bishop sat out Sunday's victory in New Orleans with a concussion.

"There's been no dropoff," Fisher said.

For a franchise that hasn't had a winning season since 1993 and is off to its best start since going 7-1 in 1991 as the Houston Oilers, winning is great no matter what it looks like.

"As long as it continues, I'm not going to question it," defensive tackle Jason Fisk said. "That's the trademark of a good team, you find a way to win. We've done a tremendous job of that so far."
