Visits with Jets, Packers scheduled; Saints, Seahawks ahead?

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

After taking a week to reflect on his future in the NFL, former Bengals quarterback Akili Smith has started to map out his schedule for finding a new team.

His first visit is a little bit of a surprise. He left Sunday to visit the New York Jets, a team that is set with two veteran quarterbacks -- starter Chad Pennington and backup Vinny Testaverde. On Tuesday, he will meet with the Green Bay Packers. After that, Smith will evaluate what he learned from his first two visits and start deciding the next move.

Although he didn't want to be the No. 3 quarterback with the Bengals, Smith would be content to be the third quarterback for a team that would be willing to coach him. The Saints are also interested, and it's not out of the question for Smith to visit them later this week.

Smith also talked with the Seahawks -- a team that interests him --but the Seahawks told him that they might be interested but their plans are to keep Trent Dilfer as the backup and try to develop Seneca Wallace as the third quarterback.
