A day to forget

By Ashley Lelie with Wayne Drehs
Special to ESPN.com

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- If you asked me to grade my performance in Monday's workout, I would give myself a 69. Honestly, things went pretty bad.

I pulled my hamstring, which has been bothering me for a month now, just before the end of my first 40-yard dash. I knew that was it. Have you ever had a bad cramp? The feeling was like that. Like a really bad Charlie Horse.

Making the Leap

  • It felt the same way the first time I pulled it. And as I sat there on the infield grass in pain, watching everyone else continue their workout, I had the feeling I was done.

I didn't want to stop. I had worked so hard for this day, and I didn't want it to end like that. But my agents and a couple of the coaches told me that it would be stupid to run and possibly hurt things even worse. That was about the worst thing I could do.

I tried to participate in the passing drills, as a couple of the coaches wanted to see me run some routes, but even that I couldn't do. It's pretty disappointing. I mean, my whole life I never really had any serious injuries, and now, when I need my body most, this hamstring thing keeps nagging me. So there's not much to be excited about. It's going to take pretty much a month to heal, so I'm done working out until at lest after the draft.

I'm going to see a doctor in San Francisco this week, so hopefully he can help me heal a little quicker. It hurts me just to walk. It tightens up a bit. So it will be good to have someone look at it.

After the workout, a lot of the different scouts and coaches came up and told me that if I took care of the hamstring, everything should be fine. So that felt good.

The way I see it, from this point on things are pretty much out of my hands. Teams are going to form their opinions and think what they want, and there's really not much I can do about it. Hopefully they can watch the films, see what I did in college and form their opinions that way.

All in all, it's a day I want to try and put behind me. Not everything went bad, as there was a great turnout, which really showed that there are a lot of teams interested. And I was happy that I was still able to run a 4.31 40, despite slipping on the track and injuring my leg. But overall, things hardly went the way I wanted. I'm glad it's finally over.

After the workout, I went to lunch with Green Bay general manager Mark Hatley. I thought it went pretty well. Everyone pretty much asks the same questions and has the same curiosities, so I'm much more comfortable now in those situations.

From here, it's off to San Francisco, where I'm filming an EA Sports commercial or something with Joey Harrington, Bryant McKinnie, Julius Peppers and some of the other top draft picks. It should be fun to get up there and see some of those guys.

After that, I'm headed to Tennessee, Kansas City, Atlanta and Jacksonville to visit some teams on their turf and go through another round of interviews. I'll likely meet some owners and reacquaint myself with the different coaches and personnel. Just another chance to get to know everybody. And another chance to bond, which is something that at this point, I don't mind one bit.
