Depth lacking at running back and wide receiver

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Eagles coach Andy Reid wants an impact wide receiver. Butch Davis of the Browns, Dick Vermeil of the Chiefs and Dennis Green of the Vikings want running backs.

Garner Charlie
Charlie Garner scored a career-high 10 touchdowns (7 rushing, 3 receiving) in 2000.

The problem for all of them is this year's free agency crop is a big tease.

For example, the Eagles would have paid more than $40 million to receiver Eric Moulds, but he re-signed with the Bills. Corey Dillon is the best young back available, but he may not break free of the Bengals.

Halfback Jerome Bettis could be the answer to the running back question but he's working on re-signing with the Steelers. The best tight end is Rickey Dudley of the Raiders, but he never reached his potential in Oakland.

Dillon, a four-time 1,000-yard runner, is clearly the marquee name in free agency and the perfect answer for the Chiefs and Browns, but the Bengals have the right to match any offer. That will scare away bidding teams. The Bengals have so much cap room that the only way they won't match an offer is if they don't think it's good business.

If Dillon stays in Cincinnati and Bettis re-signs, the running back position is led by two backs who fit best with their current teams: Charlie Garner with the 49ers and Tiki Barber with the Giants.

The 49ers don't think they can afford Garner's $4 million-a-year-plus demands, so they may turn to Barber, who is struggling to get more than $3 million a year from the Giants. Garner and Barber each showed that they can mix explosive plays with durability. Garner gained 1,142 yards, while Barber posted a 4.7-yard average and a 1,006-yard season.

Priest Holmes of the Ravens is the consolation prize, and a desperate team could still call the Seahawks to acquire Ricky Watters in a trade.

The top wide receivers in free agency aren't No. 1 threats. Derrick Mason of the Titans tops the list because he can catch passes and be a top return specialist. The Titans, however, are trying to keep him off the market knowing they may release receivers Yancey Thigpen and Carl Pickens to clear cap room.

Albert Connell isn't expected to return to the Redskins, so he will draw plenty of interest. James McKnight of the Cowboys is a speed threat that owner Jerry Jones doesn't want to lose.

The remaining group of Dedric Ward of the Jets, James Jett of the Raiders, Matthew Hatchette of the Vikings and Eddie Kennison of the Bears won't draw the big dollars.

At tight end, Dudley could get big dollars. The former Raiders No. 1 pick can be a dominant blocker and beat most linebackers or safeties on deep routes. His problem is consistently catching the ball. The tight end class also includes Pete Mitchell of the Giants, Byron Chamberlain of the Broncos, O.J. Santiago of the Browns and Johnny McWilliams of the Vikings.

It's a banner year for top young guards. The problem is teams are reluctant to pay $4 million a year for a guard. Still, general managers will be feasting on Will Shields of the Chiefs, Jeff Hartings of the Lions, Pete Kendall of the Seahawks, Dan Neil of the Broncos, Ross Verba of the Packers, Frank Middleton of the Buccaneers and recently released Tre' Johnson, formerly of the Redskins. The Ravens expect to re-sign Jeff Mitchell, the top free agent center. The Bucs are trying to re-sign the best young tackle in free agency: Jerry Wunsch. If they do, Dolphins veteran Richmond Webb will have his pick of teams.
