Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez begins his annual July fling in the NBA summer league in Southern California, but this year he's even more serious about his second sport. Before he reports to Chiefs training camp, Gonzalez has scheduled workouts for NBA teams in Boston and Salt Lake City. If an NBA team likes what it sees, Gonzalez is willing to play power forward as soon as the Chiefs season is over, just like he did when he was a two-sport player at Cal.

Fast times in Miami
The Dolphins' offseason moves to get James McKnight, Dedric Ward and rookie Chris Chambers have improved team speed at wide receiver. McKnight blazed a 4.33 40 last week. Ward and Chambers each ran in the mid-4.4s. A year ago, coach Dave Wannstedt didn't have a veteran receiver who ran better than the high 4.5s.

Suplemental draft
Former Washington State middle linebacker Curtis Holden is considered the best of 10 prospects eligible for the July 18 supplemental draft. Grade problems prematurely ended Holden's college career, but what helps Holden's stock is that he's available after a weak linebacker draft in which only three were taken in the first two rounds. (on camera) If the 240-pound Holden runs a sub 4.6 40, he could go in the fourth or fifth round, a possible steal because he was rated the fifth best inside linebacker in pro scouts' spring grades (off camera).

What's kicking?
The Saints and 49ers are offering one-year contracts at the NFL minimum of $477,000, albeit laden with incentives, for a veteran kicker. The list available is a who's who of kicking -- Morten Andersen, Al Del Greco, John Carney, Brad Daluiso and Doug Brien. Del Greco appears to be the closest to considering the Saints' offer, but the rest may wait into the exhibition season to see if younger, less expensive kickers don't work out.
