HONOLULU -- Rich Gannon completed 12 of 14 passes, threw for 160 yards and drove the AFC to touchdowns on both of his drives in the AFC's 38-17 whipping of the NFC in the Pro Bowl on Sunday.
Leave it to his head coach at Oakland to dwell on the mistakes. "He could've completed every ball," Jon Gruden said of Gannon's two blemishes on his Pro Bowl MVP performance. "He can always play better, but I can talk to him like that and get away with it." Making his second straight appearance in Hawaii, Gannon left the NFC defense looking helpless. He built a quick 14-0 first-quarter lead by moving the AFC 87 yards in nine plays and completing all six passes, including an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez. He then engineered a 10-play, 90-yard drive that was capped by a 16-yard touchdown throw to Marvin Harrison. The 35-year-old Gannon didn't throw an incompletion until his ninth attempt when a play-action pass deflected off Gonzalez's hands. Gannon's 85.7 completion percentage was the second best mark in Pro Bowl history for performances with at least 10 attempts. Calling plays from the Raiders' playbook made things easy. "There's no question that helped," Gannon said of having not to learn a new offense in one week. "It's our system and it's our coaching staff. It really was a nice way to spend a week in Hawaii with the people that you work with. It's a nice reward for having a pretty successful season." The Raiders' season effectively ended when Gannon suffered a shoulder separation in the first half of Oakland's 16-3 loss to the Ravens in the AFC championship game. Gannon said he hurt his right shoulder on the first hit he took that day, then aggravated the injury when 340-pound defensive tackle Tony Siragusa landed on him.
"I don't know if I'm over it yet physically," Gannon said of the injury. "But I certainly would've been able to play had I been in the Super Bowl last week. It was an unfortunate play and came at a bad time for us this season." "Rich is a warrior. He's a competitor through and through," 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia said. "He wanted to play in the game today and came out and made good decisions and threw the ball well. He didn't get racked around fortunately for him. He was able to get out safely and get out with the MVP." Gannon wouldn't mind seeing more of the Pro Bowl's quarterback-friendly format. "I wish it was like this all the time," he said. "They (the defense) can't blitz. They can't dog. They can only play a couple of coverages, so it makes it tough on them." Gruden said the Pro Bowl MVP award was a fitting finish for Gannon's season. In throwing for 3,430 yards and 28 touchdowns, Gannon led the Raiders to the AFC West title and an impressive 27-0 divisional playoff rout of the Dolphins. He finished fourth in the league MVP balloting behind Marshall Faulk, Donovan McNabb and Eddie George. "I think it's a great accomplishment to win 13 games and be selected the starter in the Pro Bowl and be the MVP," Gruden said. "I'm really proud of him and happy for him." "This is something I can look back on 10, 15 years from now," Gannon said. "Other than that, it's being in the right place at the right time and making a couple of plays."
