Experts: Playoffs would be wild

ESPN.com

The NFL announced that it will keep its 16-game regular season intact but it still hasn't decided what to do with its playoff schedule. One distinct possibility is that there will be only one wild-card team from each conference.

Under those circumstances, we asked ESPN's experts who they think would be the lucky non-division title teams to make the postseason.

Who would be the lone wild-card teams in the AFC and NFC?

Merril Hoge
Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints
I like the Colts' offensive firepower. And their improved defense will be just good enough to allow them to be one of the top four teams in the AFC. With Peyton Manning at the helm, he will put the Colts into position to make the playoffs. In the NFC, the Saints have the most ability to survive as a wild-card team, assuming the Rams win the NFC West. The Saints still have the same quality they created last year: depth. They have playmakers offensively and defensively. Aaron Brooks, as the season progresses, will start to feel more comfortable. His playmaking ability will elevate New Orleans.

Andrea Kremer
Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints
The Rams and the Saints will compete neck and neck for the NFC West title, but I think St. Louis will win the division. The Saints are simply the next best team in the conference. They would have been my top-seeded wild-card team in the NFC even with three wild-card teams. Some people are even picking them to reach the Super Bowl for the same reasons I like them: their quarterback situation, their depth at running back and their dominant defense. The wild-card situation is more brutal in the AFC. There isn't a clear-cut winner in two divisions in particular -- the AFC West with the Broncos and the Raiders and the AFC Central with the Ravens and the Titans. Division games are always the most important. But with only one wild card, that's the case more than ever. Looking at the individual team schedules, I think the Broncos will win the AFC West, leaving the Raiders as my wild-card choice. Rich Gannon needs to stay healthy, but they have depth at receiver and running back (with the tremendous addition of Charlie Garner), a solid defense and Sebastian Janikowski, who already has one game-winning field goal. Plus, they came so close last year. This is the Raiders' last window of opportunity because they are getting too old.

Mark Malone
Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers
There are six teams in the AFC who are legitimate Super Bowl contenders, which means there will be two legit Super Bowl contenders on the outside looking in come playoff time. There will probably only be one game separating the wild-card team from the rest of the pack in each conference, so predicting who it's going to be is really tough. But the Ravens probably have the best shot in the AFC. The AFC West is so deep, the top teams in that conference might cancel each other out. And you could make an argument that the East is the weakest division in the conference, so I'm going with the Ravens from the Central. In the NFC, it will probably be Green Bay. The likely candidate to win the NFC Central is the Bucs, with the Packers in second place. They will probably be better than the second place team in the NFC East (Giants) or West (Saints or Rams).

Sean Salisbury
Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints
In the preseason I picked Denver, Tennessee and Indianapolis to win the AFC divisions. Of the teams remaining, I would pick the Raiders over the Ravens. Oakland is a Super Bowl-caliber team with great depth and a better running game than Baltimore. I would pick the Ravens if they had Jamal Lewis. While the Ravens have a superior defense, the Raiders are just a better overall team. If the Raiders win the AFC West, my wild-card choice would be the Broncos. In the NFC, because I picked St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Philadelphia to win the divisions, my choice would be the Saints over the Packers. If they get a few breaks, New Orleans could be playing in late January. I love the Saints' offensive line, and they are a nastier pass-rush team.

Mark Schlereth
Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers
In the NFC, it will be the Buccaneers, because I don't think anybody is good enough in the NFC East or West to warrant a wild-card berth. Each of those conferences will get their division champ, and that will be it. I've predicted the Vikings to win the NFC Central, and I think the Bucs will get the wild card. The AFC is a much tougher, deeper conference right now. The AFC West has the most talent, so I'm giving the Raiders the Wild Card from that conference. The Raiders will win most of their games, except the ones against the team I have picked to be the AFC West winner, the Broncos.
