Holmgren, Shanahan among those on shaky ground

ESPN.com

Who is the most unobvious coach on the hot seat?

Joe Theismann
Mike Holmgren
He is in a situation where he has to make a decision about which hat he wants to wear in Seattle. It will be a tough decision: Does the GM fire the coach or does the coach resign to be the GM? That presents a great question. I think it would be good for the Seahawks if he could focus more of his attention on coaching again because it looks like Matt Hasselbeck is starting to play better for him.

Mark Schlereth
Mike Shanahan
Since John Elway's retirement, the Broncos have been close to a .500 team (32-29). Many of his personnel decisions have come under scrutiny; for instance, he signed Dale Carter to a six-year, $34 million contract in 1999 and let Steve Atwater leave. He signed Brian Griese to a six-year, $39 million contract. Yes, Shanahan won back-to-back Super Bowls, but a lot of the players were in place under former coach Wade Phillips and GM Bob Ferguson when Shanahan took over. Last year Shanahan flirted with taking the University of Florida job and said it was his dream job. Plus, he started the season 6-2 and has since lost four of the last five. He's being looked at through a magnifying glass now.

Andrea Kremer
Steve Mariucci
Even though I don't agree with it, and I can't substantiate any good reason for it, I would have to choose Mariucci. Once again, rumors have built steam that his job would be in jeopardy if the 49ers don't go deep into the playoffs. And Mike Holmgren is rumored to be a candidate to return to the Bay Area. It seems every year at this time these rumors surface about Mariucci, and he manages to hold the team together.

Mike Golic
Tom Coughlin
He was thinking about leaving last year. People say he has talent in Jacksonville when his key players -- Mark Brunell, Fred Taylor and Jimmy Smith -- are healthy. The Jaguars were kind of a middle-of-the-road team this year. Some thought they could surprise. But with some of the decisions he has made over the years, he may be on the hot seat more than people think, even though I like him as a coach.

Mark Malone
Mike Holmgren
He has been mentioned among coaches on the hot seat, and I agree with that assessment. Even if he isn't replaced as Seahawks' coach, I believe he will be asked to relinquish his GM duties. That would enable him to focus on being the head coach -- game-planning and the like -- which is his strength. Owner Paul Allen would be foolish to replace him, because Holmgren has proven himself as one of the NFL's better coaches. But Holmgren might just need some help in the personnel realm.
