Who are the award winners at the midseason mark?

MVP: Drew Bledsoe, QB, Buffalo
It's a toss-up between Brett Favre and Bledsoe. But I'm going with Bledsoe because he stepped in and learned in a new system under offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, and he has thrived in it. The Bills have already won two more games than they did in 2001. At midseason, they have a playoff life, which would not be the case without Bledsoe. Beyond the numbers, Bledsoe has lifted an entire team and given every player confidence. Plus, despite losing to the Patriots, he handled everything before and after the game with class.

Top rookie: Julius Peppers, DE, Carolina
A league-high nine sacks speak volumes. He is in a position to break the rookie sack record. He has done a nice job moving from right end in college to left end in the NFL. John Fox plays him like he did Michael Strahan in New York. Peppers has limited pass-rushing moves, but what he does he does great. He is an excellent athlete with strong pursuit to the ball and causes fumbles. He is doing it all right now.

Top coach: Marty Schottenheimer, San Diego
He has done a terrific job. Look at where the Chargers were a year ago. He has a first-year starter at quarterback, a second-year running back. He had to put together a new staff. It's not like San Diego was loaded with superstar talent, and he just took over. Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay would be my second choice.

Comeback player: Robert Edwards, RB, Miami
There was a possibility he wouldn't even be able to walk after the injury he suffered. He has not only walked, but he has also given the Dolphins an added weapon as a good third-down back. He allows Ricky Williams to take a break and brings another dimension to the team as well as depth. Along with running and catching the ball well, he is also effective in protection. To people in the Dolphins' organization, Edwards has been as big an addition as Williams.

Team living on borrowed time: Indianapolis Colts
Defensively, the Colts are as soft as Charmin. They're confidence is wavering. I don't think they believe they can stop anybody. Offensively, Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison are wonderful weapons. But with James hurting and so much pressure on Manning, the Colts are living on borrowed time. Manning was one of my preseason MVP picks; I love the guy. But with expectations so high and so much pressure on him to succeed, there is too much responsibility on his shoulders. | |

Super Bowl prediction:
I'm not going to change my mind midway through, so I'm sticking with my preseason pick of the St. Louis Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Rams will probably need to win their division out right. And at some point during the playoffs, they'll probably end up playing at Lambeau Field -- which is always a tall order. But even at 0-5, the Rams were never your typical 0-5 team. They're one of the most talented NFC teams, and could certainly still find themselves in the playoffs. The Steelers got off to a rough start, but they're playing as good as any team in the AFC right now. They've found some offensive balance and their defense is playing extremely well. I'm hoping these teams do something miraculous so I look like a prophet when it's all over.
