About the play: This is a pick-a-side route. Both the routes are mirror images. Drew Bledsoe will play it off the middle linebacker. If the linebacker works weak, then Bledsoe will work to the weak side. If the the middle linebacker goes strong, Bledsoe will go strong with the running back as the safe outlet. The Patriots have a very good receiving corps. Bledsoe has used them all. Once Bledsoe picks the right side, he will work the corner route to H or Z on his 6-yard delay route. The corner will be run at 12 yards. After Bledsoe works off the middle linebacker, his hand and eyes will go right to the cornerback. If the corner retreats, then Bledsoe will hit the delay right now. If the corner jumps the delay, then Bledsoe will have an easy pass to the corner route. Bledsoe throws the ball on the corner route as well as anyone. The running back is an easy outlet if everyone is covered. Keys to the play: The key on this is that both slot receivers keep the stem on their route straight to 12 yards so the safety does not know if it is a corner or post. They also don't want to get pushed too wide or the play is finished. When to expect the play: This is a good play against either zone or man coverage. the Pats will call it anywhere on the field.
Critical player: It is critical that Bledsoe read the corner well. He must use his eyes to hold the corner wherever he wants him. If the corner reads Bledsoe is giving the route away, then this becomes an easy interception. The corner could actually cover the H and Z if Bledsoe doesn't bait him. This can be a huge play if executed properly.
