Colts back sat out Friday's preseason game

ESPN.com news services

Indianapolis Colts: Colts running back Edgerrin James, historically an open critic of preseason games, sat out Friday's Seahawks/Colts game with a sore hamstring. Indianapolis head coach Tony Dungy decided to hold James out of the contest, despite James' doing some pregame work.

"Actually, (the injury) probably happened in Wednesday's practice," Dungy said to the Indianapolis Star. "It wasn't any one thing, just a little bit sore. Sometimes that happens when you have injuries at a position. Guys who are healthy take on a little more work."

Thompson out for season Fullback Donnel Thompson will miss this season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

"He's one of our leaders on special teams, a guy who practices hard,'' coach Tony Dungy said Saturday. "Someone else will have to step up.''

Thompson was injured Friday night while covering a punt early in the second quarter of Indianapolis' 21-7 preseason win over Seattle.

"I guess I was on someone's back hip and I tried to stop on his leg,'' Thompson said. "I kept on going.''

Thompson was helped off the field by two trainers then was carted into the locker room. He had an MRI on Saturday morning and showed up in the locker room on crutches.

Houston Texans: Texans starting fullback Jarrod Baxter suffered a sprained arch in his left foot Friday night against the Dallas Cowboys, and could miss the entire season, the Houston Chronicle reported. Baxter, who started 10 games as a rookie last season, suffered the injury during the third quarter when he was hit by a pair of Dallas defenders near the Texans bench.

"One went high, and one went low," Baxter said. "My foot rolled in the turf and twisted like wringing out a rag."

Baxter, whose role with the Texans was mostly as a blocker out of the backfield and on special teams, said he did not receive a clear answer from the medical staff about the extent of his injury. He will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging test in Houston.

Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks have suspended negotiations with franchise player Walter Jones until after the season, sources familiar with the talks confirmed Friday to the Tacoma News Tribune.

The move ends the possibility of a long-term agreement this season and now Jones has two options, according to the paper. He can either sign the one-year, $5.7 million deal that all franchise left tackles received this year or remain on the sideline without a paycheck.

The Seahawks and Jones' agent declined comment to the paper on Friday. According to the Post Tribune, the sides remained millions apart in negotiations when Seattle called off talks for a second consecutive season.

A year ago, the Seahawks waited until a few days before the regular season to call off talks with Jones. He signed the one-year franchise offer within two weeks and reported to the team in time to play in the third game of the regular season. Seattle was 0-2 by then, however, and the team finished with a 7-9 record.

Green Bay Packers: The Packers are close to an agreement with former Jacksonville nose tackle Larry Smith, if the team doesn't sign free-agent lineman Dan Wilkinson, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported. The Packers are competing with the Detroit Lions for Wilkinson's services, but Detroit has become the front-runner after substantially increasing its offer in the past two days, according to the Press Gazette. Jacksonville cut Smith this week after he was 30 minutes late for a practice. He already was in new coach Jack Del Rio's doghouse for reporting to training camp in poor physical condition and he had to pull out of the first practice of camp because of heat-related illness.

The Packers are trying to replace nose tackle Gilbert Brown, who tore his right biceps last week in their exhibition game at Atlanta. They haven't yet put him on injured reserve, but he is expected to be out for the rest of the season.

The underachieving Wilkinson, 30, is the most talented nose tackle available. Washington cut him last month after he refused to take a pay cut from $3.5 million to $2 milllion.
