Fiedler expected to play against Jaguars

Associated Press

DAVIE, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler returned to practice Sunday after missing the team's first preseason game with back spasms.

Coach Dave Wannstedt expects Fiedler to play the first quarter against Jacksonville this week.

Fiedler said he made it through practice without pain. He has a history of back problems, including injuries before the 2000 and 2002 seasons. The current injury is considered unrelated.

Fiedler missed six games last season with a broken right thumb.

Meanwhile, starting left tackle Mark Dixon did not practice and is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on his ankle.

Miami placed long-snapper Ed Perry on injured reserve with ligament damage in his left knee and signed Sean McDermott to take over the snapping duties. McDermott played in 16 games last season for Houston, before being released in June.

Fullback Rob Konrad had surgery to insert a pin and stabilize a broken right pinkie finger. Konrad will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, and Wannstedt expects him to miss at least a couple of weeks.

Second-round draft pick Eddie Moore, who was competing with Morlon Greenwood for a starting linebacker spot, will miss at least the rest of the preseason with a foot injury.

Wannstedt said tight end Marco Battaglia is thinking about retiring and was excused from practice.
