St. Louis' third-receiver spot up for grabs

ESPN.com news services

St. Louis Rams: The Rams cleared up on the early battles at wide receiver by terminating the contract of wide receiver Terrence Wilkins, who was signed last season to replace Az Hakim as the third receiver.

Troy Edwards and rookie draft choices Shaun McDonald and Kevin Curtis moved ahead of Wilkins during the spring mini-camp. McDonald is trying to beat out Edwards as third receiver behind Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.

The Rams also released veteran quarterback Scott Covington. They signed Greg Zolman Friday to compete for the third quarterback job.

San Francisco 49ers: Coach Dennis Erickson revealed Monday during a pre-camp conference call that quarterback Jeff Garcia aggravated a back problem while working with a trainer last week in Los Angeles. Garcia had an MRI and is currently rehabbing.

Erickson doesn't know if the injury will prevent Garcia from practicing early in camp.

"We'll just have to see; it is just so hard to evaluate," Erickson said. "Of course, everybody's on the cautious side right now, so we will just have to wait and see. It's just a disc that protruded, so they say. He had some back spasms. It's not going to be season ending by any means, but we will just have to take it slower right now. He had the MRI and he has some pain and spasms, so we will just have to wait and see."

Left tackle Derrick Deese had ankle surgery a month ago to remove loose debris in the ankle. He is going to miss some of training camp. Center Jeremy Newberry also had ankle surgery but he is closer to practicing, but the 49ers will be cautious in getting him on the field.

Denver Broncos: Danny Kanell's bid to make a NFL comeback ended Monday when the Broncos released him. The Broncos gave Kanell a chance in mini-camp to make the training camp roster.

  • The Broncos signed seventh-round draft pick Clint Mitchell and free-agent running back Antwon McCray on Monday.

Mitchell, a defensive end, played at Florida, finishing with 118 tackles and six sacks in 20 starts.

McCray was signed as a free agent out of Toledo by Pittsburgh in 2002 and waived during training camp. He was on the Steelers' practice squad before being released last month.

Terms of the contracts were not released.

Tennessee Titans: The Titans signed second-round draft pick Tyrone Calico and third-round selection Chris Brown to multiyear deals Monday.

Wide receiver Calico caught 194 passes for 2,636 yards and 17 touchdowns at Middle Tennessee State.

Brown was third in the nation in rushing with 1,841 yards on 303 carries, and scored 19 touchdowns last season for Colorado.

Financial terms of the contracts were not announced.

Top draft choice Andre Woolfork, a cornerback from Oklahoma, is the only unsigned selection.

The Titans waived quarterback Tyler Watts, guard Jake Kuppe and defensive tackle Dustin Barno. All three were undrafted rookies.
