Pack sign Martin, close in on Brown

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Green Bay Packers: The Packers bulked up their ability to stop the run by signing defensive tackle Steve Martin and they are awaiting the signing of defensive tackle Gilbert Brown.

Martin agreed to a one-year, $655,000 contract Sunday. Brown is expected Sunday or Monday to sign a one-year, $780,000 contract that includes a $25,000 signing bonus. Both may work together in some run stopping situations.

A seven-year veteran, Martin has played in 101 games. He started six games for the Patriots and played a total of 14 games. In 2001, he had 15 starts and had 212 tackles and 6½ sacks.

The Packers' first practice for veterans will be Tuesday. Rookies reported Friday, practiced once on Saturday and had two practices Sunday.

St. Louis Rams: Rams wide receiver Torry Holt received a $12.5 million signing bonus in the seven-year, $42.005 million deal that he signed Friday. Holt will receive base salaries of $530,000 in 2003 and $535,000 in 2004.

In 2005, his salary jumps to $2.635 million, along with receiving a $100,000 workout bonus. His base salaries in 2006 through 2009 are $3.85 million, $4.15 million, $5.65 million and $6.65 million. In each of those years, he will receive a $1.25 million roster bonus and a $100,000 workout bonus.

New England Patriots: The Patriots continued their push to sign all of their draft choices well before Wednesday's reporting date.

The latest to agree is cornerback Eugene Wilson, one of New England's two second-round choices and the 36th overall pick in the draft. Wilson agreed to a five-year, $3.915 million that included a $2 million signing bonus. There is an escalator for the fifth year that would increase the base salary to $3 million, based on playing time.

Wilson, the fourth pick in the round, was the highest second-round choice to reach an agreement. He played 43 games at Illinois and had 11 interceptions during his four-year college career.

The Patriots had five draft choices, including a first and two seconds, in the first four rounds and have reached agreements with all of them. They report to camp with rookies on Wednesday.

New York Jets: The Jets reached agreement Sunday with their second-round draft choice, linebacker Victor Hobson, on a five-year, $3.435 million contract that includes a $1.52 million signing bonus. There is an escalator clause in the contract that could take his base salary to $2 million in the final year of the deal, based on playing time.

Hobson, 23, played 48 games in four seasons at Michigan. He had 15 career sacks, including 11 in his final two years.

The Jets reported to camp Sunday.
