DE Robinson has sentencing delayed until July 22

ESPN.com news services

Chicago Bears: The Bears likely won't know until just three days before the start of training camp whether defensive tackle Bryan Robinson will be on the playing field for the outset of workouts or sitting in a jail cell.

Scheduled to have a drunk driving charge resolved last week, Robinson had sentencing delayed until July 22, only three days before the Bears report to training camp at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. Robinson is attempting to avoid jail time and his attorney filed a motion June 27 seeking to have Judge Patrick Lawler credit the veteran lineman's recent stint at a treatment facility as time spent.

Robinson in May pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, his second DUI arrest in the past year, and faces a possible 30-day jail term. But he voluntarily entered a 17-day treatment program at Gateway Foundation in Like Villa, Ill., and attorney Steve Simonian has contended that stint, with 360 hours of community service that Robinson has worked, is sufficient punishment.

A six-year veteran, Robinson, 28, has been subject to league-administered drug tests and has said that he hasn't taken a drink since the October 2002 incident. Robinson still faces possible league discipline, including a potential suspension, because of the second DUI. The NFL probably will not decide on sanctions until his legal status is resolved.

Used primarily at defensive end, Robinson moved inside to tackle last season and he is expected to play there again in 2003. Chicago officials have been very supportive of the defensive lineman throughout his ordeal.

New York Giants: Defensive back Frank Walker of Tuskegee University, the second of the Giants three draft choices in the sixth round, has signed a three-year, $955,000 contract with the team.

Walker, 22, received a $45,000 signing bonus and the standard rookie minimum base salaries of $225,000 (2003), $305,000 (2004) and $380,000 (2005). He is the sixth of the Giants' 11 selections in the 2003 draft to reach contract terms. All six are among the final seven New York choices.

Able to play both cornerback and safety, Walker appeared in 41 games and started in 23 of them at Tuskegee, registering 92 tackles, six interceptions and 34 passes defensed. He has excellent speed and greatly improved his coverage techniques in his senior season.

Carolina Panthers: Little-used offensive lineman Tutan Reyes, who has appeared in just one game in three NFL seasons, has reached agreement to re-sign with the Panthers.

The former University of Mississippi standout will sign a one-year contract for the $605,000 restricted free agent qualifying offer the Panthers made him in February to retain a right of first refusal in the event he signed an offer sheet elsewhere. Reyes, 25, is expected to provide depth at both guard and tackle.

A fifth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2000, he was acquired by the Panthers on waivers from the Tampa Bay Bucs last year.
