Washington Redskins: Gerry Snyder, the father of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and himself a minority shareholder in the franchise, died Friday morning after a lengthy battle with a variety of heart-related problems. The elder Snyder, 70, will be eulogized and buried on Sunday afternoon. Over the past several weeks, Daniel Snyder has frequently traveled between Washington and Rochester, Minn., to visit his father, hospitalized there at the Mayo Clinic. During a break in the NFL meeting at Philadelphia on Wednesday, Daniel Snyder described his father as "a very sick man" when a member of the media inquired. A fan of the Redskins for three decades, Gerry Snyder was a longtime journalist and an author, and he introduced his son to the NFL game in 1971. Gerry Snyder served as the editor-in-chief of Synder Communications during the company's early years. New Orleans Saints: Offensive tackle Victor Riley will receive probation, but probably no further sanctions from the NFL, after pleading guilty Friday to assaulting his wife during a 2001 domestic disturbance incident. The incident occurred while Riley, 28, was playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. The five-year veteran signed with New Orleans as an unrestricted free agent last summer. Riley originally reached a diversion agreement with Johnson County (Mo.) officials on the charges. But last November, he was charged with DUI, and prosecutors succeeded in having the diversion program revoked, contending he violated its conditions. On Friday, Riley agreed he had breached the diversion program, under which the charges eventually could have been expunged from his record. A judge accepted Riley's guilty plea on Friday and he will be sentenced on July 3. Under terms of the plea agreement, to which Riley admitted guilt for ramming his car into a vehicle being driven by his wife and in which his infant daughter was a passenger, he will receive probation. Riley was suspended by the league for the opening game of the 2002 season as a result of the incident. A reserve for most of the 2002 season, Riley is expected to start for the Saints at right tackle in 2003, as the team has shuffled its blocking unit to accommodate for the trade of Kyle Turley to the St. Louis Rams. |
