Johnson charged with marijuana possession

Associated Press

TIFTON, Ga. -- Green Bay Packers defensive end Joe Johnson was charged with marijuana possession while driving to Florida after a deputy saw his car stopped on the highway.

Johnson posted bond of $1,625 and was released from jail Thursday, sheriff's Capt. Bobby Brannen said.

Packers spokesman Lee Remmel said Thursday night the team was aware of what happened but had no other comment. Johnson's agent, Roosevelt Barnes, did not immediately return a call.

Deputy David Hardy said he saw Johnson's hazard lights flashing. As he approached, Johnson got out and met him at the rear of the car. He told the deputy he needed directions to Tallahassee, Fla.

Hardy said he smelled marijuana smoke, searched the car and found what was believed to be a misdemeanor amount of marijuana.

Johnson signed with the Packers in 2002 as an unrestricted free agent and played in five games. He missed Green Bay's minicamp this month after triceps surgery.
