TRENTON, N.J. -- New York Giants defensive tackle Keith Hamilton was charged with cocaine and marijuana possession after his car was stopped for having tinted windows. Hamilton was released on his own recognizance, and the charges will be referred to the Morris County prosecutor, authorities said Friday. Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said the team was aware of the situation. He would not comment on the arrest or any disciplinary action Hamilton, a 12-year veteran, might face from the team or the NFL. The defensive tackle is not at risk for being suspended by the league. Under the NFL's substance abuse policy, a player does not receive a four-game suspension until his third offense. However, Hamilton could be elevated into stage two of the program because of a past guilty plea to driving while under the influence of cocaine. A stage two punishment would probably be a fine equivalent to four game checks, the Newark Star-Ledger reported. Hamilton's sport utility vehicle was stopped Thursday in Harding Township, said Sgt. Dan Nunn, a police spokesman. Following a search, Hamilton was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. |
