SAN FRANCISCO -- Greg Knapp will keep his job as the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator under new coach Dennis Erickson. At a news conference Wednesday announcing Erickson's hiring, Erickson said Knapp will return for a third season as the 49ers' offensive coordinator. Knapp signed a one-year contract extension shortly after Steve Mariucci was fired Jan. 15. Erickson also plans to keep the 49ers' venerated West Coast offense in place, though he will add new terminology. "Why change it? It's been very successful,'' Erickson said. "We're going to look at everything, but I don't see many big changes in store.'' Offensive line coach Pat Morris and secondary coach Brett Maxie also are under contract with the 49ers, but most of the rest of Mariucci's remaining staff has left. Erickson plans to interview the remaining coaches in the next two days. Erickson also seemed likely to retain quarterbacks coach Ted Tollner, a good friend who is under contract with the 49ers for next season. Defensive coordinator Jim Mora, a finalist for the head coaching job, hasn't decided whether to return to the 49ers. Owner John York said the team wants to keep Mora in his current position, but probably would agree to release him from his contract. Mora interviewed with the Carolina Panthers for their vacant coordinator post, and Mariucci might try to hire him in Detroit.
