After interviewing for the job, it now appears Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is the leading candidate for the Jacksonville Jaguars' coaching vacancy. Dennis Green withdrew from consideration and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops declined to interview for the Jags' coaching job. Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver is meeting Saturday with Ravens' director of college scouting Phil Savage -- Ferentz and Savage have worked together before, which is an excellent sign that Ferentz may be on the verge of getting the Jags' post, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports. Weaver and team vice president Paul Vance met with Green on Tuesday in Dallas, but Green pulled out of the running Friday. Ferentz is highly regarded by officials from several teams. Ferentz, 47, was an assistant with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens for six seasons before being named the successor to legendary Iowa coach Hayden Fry in December of 1998. In four seasons at Iowa, Ferentz is 24-23 record, going from just 1-10 in his first season to 11-2 this year and an Orange Bowl berth. Ferentz is known as a tremendous communicator, a stickler for detail, and a strong leader. His primary area of expertise for much of his career was the offensive line but, over the years, he has developed the ability to understand and deal with the big picture. The team confirmed that Stoops has indicated to Weaver that he will not be a candidate for the Jaguars job. Tom Coughlin, the only coach in the Jaguars' short history, was fired after a 6-10 season. Information from ESPN's Chris Mortensen and ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli was used in this report.
