Holmgren's uncertain future may not include GM job

Associated Press

SEATTLE -- Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren will be asked to relinquish his job as general manager, a Seattle television station reported late Sunday.

The station, KCPQ , cited an unidentified player in its report, but a team spokesman called it "erroneous'' and said no decision has been made.

Holmgren is expected to meet with team owner Paul Allen and team president Bob Whitsitt within 48 hours to discuss his future.

"We'll do that when the season's over, which I did last year, which I've done every year since I've been here,'' Holmgren said last week. "We'll meet at that point.''

Holmgren is 31-33 in four years in Seattle, closing this season with three straight wins after a 31-28 overtime victory at San Diego on Sunday. The Seahawks went 7-9, following 9-7, 6-10 and 9-7 seasons under Holmgren.

The Seahawks reached the playoffs in 1999, Holmgren's first season, and lost to Miami 20-17 in the AFC wild-card round.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Monday that if Holmgren stays, some of his defensive coaches will have to go, including coordinator Steve Sidwell. Sidwell joined Holmgren's coaching staff as its defensive coordinator in January 2000.

After the game Sunday, Holmgren was asked if he expected to be coaching the Seahawks next season.

''We'll see,'' he told the P-I. ''I'm going to meet with Bob tomorrow and meet with my coaches tomorrow and meet with the players tomorrow. And we'll see what happens.''

Asked if he would be willing to accept compromises when it came to his role and his staff, Holmgren was vague.

''We'll sit down and talk about that,'' he said. ''Now, I don't know if that will be the topic.''

Holmgren signed a $32 million, eight-year contract with the Seahawks, who are owned by billionaire Paul Allen, to be their coach and general manager after coaching the Green Bay Packers to a 75-37 record and two Super Bowl appearances. Green Bay beat New England 35-21 in Super Bowl XXXI. The first five seasons of Holmgren's $4-million-a-year contract in Seattle are believed to be guaranteed.
