Griese feeling good enough to back up Beuerlein

Associated Press

DENVER -- Brian Griese had little trouble with his sprained left knee in practice on Thursday, clearing the way for him to back up Steve Beuerlein against Arizona.

Griese re-injured his knee when he was sacked by Oakland's Bill Romanowski in the second quarter of Denver's 28-16 loss to Oakland last week.

Griese threw two interceptions and had a quarterback rating of 14.7 before he was injured, prompting coach Mike Shanahan to announce that Beuerlein will start against the Cardinals, even if Griese was healthy.

Shanahan wasn't sure if Griese would be well enough to be Denver's No. 2 quarterback against the Cardinals on Sunday, but said he was moving well in practice on Thursday.

"It looks like he felt pretty good today,'' Shanahan said. "He threw the ball quite well, so he should be good.''
