Jeremy Shockey made headlines earlier this season for comments he made through the media. On Thursday, he received more attention, but this time, he didn't even say a word. The Giants tight end did not call in for his weekly radio appearance on WFAN for the second time in two months, and hosts Mike Francesa and Chris Russo responded by calling him "unprofessional" and firing him from the show. According to a report in the New York Daily News, Shockey, who receives $1,000 for the weekly spot, was scheduled to appear at 4 p.m. ET, but called 15 minutes late and never went on the air. Francesa did say on the air that Shockey needed "to grow up" and added "he's off our show for good." Earlier in the season on the same radio show, Shockey called the Eagles' secondary overrated two days before the Giants played Philadelphia, and followed by missing a scheduled appearance in November. Shockey later explained on the air he forgot to call because he was picking up his mother at the airport. Shockey also has apologized for comments he made about gays during a Sept. 10 interview on Howard Stern's radio show. During the interview, Stern asked Shockey if he thought there were any gay players in the NFL. "I don't know,'' Shockey said on the show. "I don't like to think about that. I hope not.'' Shockey also was asked if he had any gay teammates when he played at the University of Miami. "No. I mean, if I knew there was a gay guy on my college football team, I probably wouldn't, you know, stand for it. You know, I think, you know, they're going to be in the shower with us and stuff, so I don't think that's gonna work." The Giants (8-6), who are fighting to stay alive in the playoff hunt, travel to face the Colts (9-5) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. |
