Griese, Sharpe will test their injuries this week

Associated Press

DENVER -- Broncos quarterback Brian Griese and tight end Shannon Sharpe will test their injuries this week with hopes of returning Sunday against San Diego.

Griese ran on a treadmill Monday and will try some lateral movements Tuesday to see if his sprained left knee is stable enough to practice.

''Everything went well today,'' Griese said. ''I ran on the treadmill, not real fast, but I did get some work and didn't have any swelling from that. Hopefully tomorrow I won't have any swelling and can come back and do some more stuff.''

Sharpe partially dislocated his right elbow against Oakland on Nov. 11, an injury that was expected to sideline him up to a month. But Sharpe said the swelling has gone down and he plans to practice Wednesday to gauge his readiness for the weekend.

''It's still a work in process, but I know it has to start at some time,'' Sharpe said. ''I'm not going to be able to just line up and try and play a football game.

''I'm going to have practice. I'm going to have to get the arm tugged on, I'm going to have to get pushed and I'm going to have to hit the ground, because that's what happens in games.''

Griese was injured against Seattle on Nov. 17, when Seahawks defensive tackle Rocky Bernard rolled into his knees. He wore a knee brace on the sideline of the Broncos' 23-20 overtime loss to Indianapolis on Sunday night and said his knee got stiff in the cold weather.

Sharpe tried out a brace while catching some passes over the weekend and said everything went well. He will wear the brace in practice on Wednesday to see how it feels, but said convincing coach Mike Shanahan that he's ready will be his biggest task.

''It doesn't matter what I think. It only matters what him and his coaching staff think,'' Sharpe said. ''If I can go out there and do a good job Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, obviously I'll get an opportunity to play in the game Sunday. How much, I don't know.''
