Favre's 164-game streak in jeopardy

Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers defensive end Vonnie Holliday wore a newly modified leather brace over his chest in practice Thursday -- his first live contact in pads since he tore a pectoral muscle at Detroit on Sept. 22.

Quarterback Brett Favre didn't practice Thursday because of the injury to his left knee, but for the second straight day he worked on his dropback steps and threw some passes off to the side while wearing a knee brace.

"It was about the same (as Wednesday),'' Favre said of the workload.

He remains questionable for Monday night's game against Miami. Favre holds the NFL record for consecutive starts by a quarterback with 164.

Holliday said he felt no discomfort in the chest area during the vigorous two-hour workout.

"My only pain right now is the pain of working with this harness,'' he said. "There's a lot of strings ... it looks like an old corset. It's crazy, but it works.

"It's kind of frustrating because it limits me a little, but I'm happy to be back out there,'' Holliday said. "It really restricts me and keeps me in tight.''

Holliday, who has missed four games, could be able to play Monday night.

He considered Thursday's practice "a true test,'' and one he felt he passed.

"I think I can be effective, but I have to see what the coaches think,'' Holliday said. "Hopefully, I'll be playing on Monday night.''

If he is cleared to play, it's unlikely Holliday will be on the field for the majority of the snaps.

The harness limits his range of motion, which won't be conducive for holding up against the Dolphins' running game led by Ricky Williams.

Holliday also doesn't want to disrupt the chemistry that has taken hold on the defensive line in his absence. Rookie Aaron Kampman has impressed filling in at Holliday's power-end position.

"There can't be a dropoff,'' Holliday said. "Kampman and those guys have been doing a great job. If I'm going to go out there, I have to be effective and be able to make plays. I have to be effective and be able to stop a guy like Ricky Williams coming downhill.''
