Buchanon undergoes surgery, out eight weeks

Associated Press

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Oakland rookie cornerback and punt returner Phillip Buchanon will miss eight weeks with a broken left wrist -- yet more bad news for the reeling Raiders.

Buchanon, the team's top draft pick out of Miami, was hurt in the second quarter of Sunday's 27-21 overtime loss to San Diego and did not return. He underwent surgery Sunday night and had pins inserted into his wrist.

Buchanon jumped into the air while defending a pass and landed awkwardly.

"We never anticipated an injury of that magnitude to our rookie cornerback on that play,'' coach Bill Callahan said. "It was astounding the height he had to make that play. The fall was bad luck, unfortunate. To lose a quality guy like Phillip Buchanon, you never expect to lose a guy like that.''

Also, kick returner/running back Terry Kirby remained in Summit Hospital in Oakland on Monday following surgery on his broken right leg. He fractured the fibula and tibia bones and is out for the season. The team said he would be hospitalized until at least Tuesday morning.

The 32-year-old Kirby, a 10-year NFL veteran, was placed on injured reserve Monday, and the Raiders signed running back Madre Hill from the practice squad to fill Kirby's spot on the 53-man roster.

Kirby was carted off the field in the third quarter. He was returning a kickoff when he carried the ball into a group of tacklers and landed awkwardly, a pile of Chargers rolling over him.

With the injuries, the Raiders (4-2) are slim in two key positions -- defensive back and running back. They are hopeful that four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Charles Woodson will return for this weekend's game at Kansas City.

Woodson, recovering from a broken right shoulder he hurt Sept. 15 at Pittsburgh, was listed as probable for the game with the Chargers, but did not play.

Callahan, whose team has lost two straight after a 4-0 start, said Oakland will work out some players this week and consider making additions to the Raiders' depleted secondary.

They could bring back cornerback Derek Combs, cut two weeks ago, and elevate Ronald Curry from the practice squad. Curry was a quarterback at North Carolina but was drafted by the Raiders this year as a return man.

"Man, I'm trying to figure this one out,'' veteran safety Rod Woodson said Monday of the slew of injuries. "I don't know what they're going to do upstairs. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens.''

Buchanon had been in the starting lineup since Charles Woodson was hurt. Now, veteran receiver Tim Brown and Charles Woodson will be relied upon to return punts -- not the ideal situation for Callahan. He said he would prefer not to use prominent players to return kicks.

They are "subjected to downfield hits, gunners,'' Callahan said.

Alvis Whitted and Marcus Knight also will be considered to return kicks, as well as Rod Woodson.

"Everybody in the locker room is still excited, still upbeat,'' Callahan said. "We've got some adversity this week.''
