McAlister's shocking play longest in league history

Associated Press

BALTIMORE -- Chris McAlister of the Baltimore Ravens set an NFL record Monday night, returning a missed field goal 108 yards for a touchdown.

It was the longest play in NFL history, breaking the record of a 106-yard kickoff return. That was done three times, the last by Roy Green of the St. Louis Cardinals against Dallas on Oct. 21, 1979.

NFL's longest plays
108 yards -- Chris McAlister, Baltimore vs. Denver, Sept. 30, 2002, missed field goal return.

106 -- Roy Green, St. Louis vs. Dallas, Oct. 21, 1979, kickoff return.

106 -- Noland Smith, Kansas City vs. Denver, Dec. 17, 1967, kickoff return.

106 -- Al Carmichael, Green Bay vs. Chicago Bears, Oct. 7, 1956, kickoff return.

The record for the longest return of a missed field goal was 104 yards by Aaron Glenn of the New York Jets against Indianapolis on Nov. 15, 1998.

McAlister's play came when Denver's Jason Elam came up short on a 57-yard field goal try at the end of the first half. McAlister caught the ball deep in the end zone, then hesitated before bringing it out.

Following a crushing block by Ray Lewis on Keith Burns at the Baltimore 5, McAlister broke to his left and easily outran the coverage. With Baltimore coach Brian Billick in pursuit on the sideline cheering him along, McAlister began waving the ball over his head at the Denver 25 and jogged the rest of the way into the end zone.

The score gave the winless Ravens a 31-3 halftime lead.
