Looking for line help, Eagles sign Sinclair

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- Former Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Sinclair signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.

Sinclair, who spent 11 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, has 73½ career sacks. He replaces Derrick Burgess, who will be out 8-to-10 weeks with a broken right foot.

To make room for Sinclair, the Eagles released tight end Tony Stewart, a fifth-round pick last year. Stewart, who went to Penn State, caught five passes for 52 yards and one touchdown last season. He was deactivated for the season opener at Tennessee.

"With the injury to Derrick Burgess, Michael will add depth to our defensive end position,'' Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He's familiar with our defensive system, having played under Tommy Brasher and Jim Johnson in Seattle.''

A sixth-round pick in 1991, the 6-foot-4, 275-pound Sinclair made three Pro Bowls (1996-98). He has started 114 of 144 games, has 345 tackles, 24 forced fumbles and ranks sixth among active players in sacks.

Sinclair attended training camp with the Denver Broncos, but was released Sept. 1. While in Seattle, Sinclair played under Brasher, the Eagles' defensive line coach, and Johnson, the team's defensive coordinator.

Burgess, a third-round pick last year, had six sacks as a rookie. He underwent surgery in Baltimore on Tuesday to have a screw placed in the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.
