ST. LOUIS -- Rams defensive end Leonard Little sustained a concussion after fainting in a restaurant, St. Louis coach Mike Martz said Friday.
Little was expected to be released from a hospital Saturday. Little won't play in the preseason finale at Kansas City next week and might not be ready for the season opener Sept. 8 in Denver.
"I would think that we would not have him in there,'' Martz said. "We'll just count on not having him.''
Tyoka Jackson and Damione Lewis will fill in until Little returns.
The concussion happened after Thursday night's 31-10 preseason loss to the San Diego Chargers. Little and some teammates were at a restaurant when Little fainted and bumped his head.
Martz blamed the fainting spell on a deep thigh bruise Little sustained in the game. The injury happened in the second quarter. Little, who led St. Louis with 14 1/2 sacks last season, sat out the rest of the game.
"What happened was he kept bleeding into the injured area,'' Martz said. "In essence, it was explained to me that it's like losing a pint or two of blood. So, you get real light-headed when you stand up. When he stood up, he went down.''
Stitches were required for the head injury, Martz said. Little will be examined again in four days.
"He's going to be fine, though,'' Martz said. "He's a tough guy. It had to be a pretty good hit he took.''
Little wanted to return after the injury, but team officials wouldn't let him because of the swelling in his leg, Martz said.
Little wasn't the only player hurt against the Chargers. Fullback James Hodgins fractured his left foot early in the second half. He had surgery Friday morning and had a screw inserted into the foot. He is expected to miss about four regular-season games.
"He's a very integral part of what we do,'' Martz said. "We'll fill in the ranks while he's gone. We'll miss him.''
Hodgins said the injury happened as he was blocking on a running play.
"When I put my foot down and kind of planted on it and kind of rolled over on the foot, I felt a little pop,'' he said. "It's just one of those things.''
Chris Hetherington, an offseason free-agent pickup, will move into the starting job at fullback. |
