IONIA, Mich. -- T.J. Duckett, mobile phone to his ear, was searching the ground underneath a footbridge around midnight. An Ionia County, Mich., Central Dispatch employee asked him what he was looking for under the bridge. "My tooth," the first round pick of the Atlanta Falcons replied. Minutes after authorities say he was assaulted while leaving the Greater Ionia Fair last week, Duckett used a mobile phone to call police. Sheriff's officials continue to investigate the attack, including whether it was racially motivated. No arrests have been made. During the two-minute 911 call, obtained by The Grand Rapids Press, Duckett told a dispatcher he was jumped by white kids and he lost a tooth. The former Michigan State running back declined the ambulance offered by the dispatcher and climbed back onto the bridge where an officer was sent to meet him. The 911 caller identified himself as Kevin Miller, but dispatch officials said the voice on the tape belonged to Duckett. The incident occurred before midnight on July 23 as Duckett crossed a footbridge over the Grand River. He had just attended rapper Nelly's concert at the fair, where he was a guest at his friend's performance. County Sheriff Dwain Dennis said three men in their early 20s blocked Duckett's path on the bridge, called the running back a racial slur and struck him on the mouth with a bottle. Duckett's injuries required stitches. Duckett fought off the men and called police. Dennis and Ionia County Prosecutor Gail Benda met with Duckett in Kalamazoo on Tuesday to get an official statement about the incident. Authorities said Duckett's account matched the accounts of two other witnesses that the department interviewed in the days after the incident. |
