HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Mike Tannenbaum, the New York Jets'
assistant vice president and a protege of Bill Parcells, on Friday
turned down a chance to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jets general manager Terry Bradway said Tannenbaum told him he decided to remain with the team. A few hours later, the Bucs announced Parcells would not become their head coach.
Bradway also asserted that Vinny Testaverde would be the Jets' starting quarterback next season.
"Nothing's changed. Vinny's back and he's going to be our quarterback," Bradway said.
Tannenbaum was in Tampa Bay this week to interview for the general manager's job. Rich McKay, the current GM, has been offered the job as president of the team.
But given a Friday deadline by the Jets to decide, Tannenbaum told Bradway at 5 p.m. that he was staying.
"It was a trying time for him," Bradway said. "I know when he went down there they had discussed some parameters. I don't know if anything became formal."
Tannenbaum has another year left on his contract and "as far as I'm concerned, Mike is a New York Jet," Bradway said.
Parcells had been contemplating taking over the Bucs' head coaching job, which became vacant when Tony Dungy was fired.
The Jets, who lost to Oakland 38-24 last week in the first round of the playoffs, held their organizational meetings earlier Friday. Bradway joked that Tannenbaum did not take part because his status was still in limbo.
"He had to sit in the corner today. He was in detention," Bradway said.
Testaverde's future has been the subject of speculation. There are salary cap issues, and some fans think it's time to take the offense in a new direction, perhaps with third-year quarterback Chad Pennington.
Bradway said there were a few details to work out with Testaverde, 38, but made it clear where he stood.
"He wants to end his career as a Jet, and that's where we are," Bradway said. |
