IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly looking
at Tampa Bay quarterback Ryan Leaf in their search for a
replacement for Troy Aikman, who was waived last week after 12
years with the team.
A team source told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Tuesday's
editions that the 24-year-old Leaf re-entered discussion of the
Cowboys' quarterback mix after a three-year NFL bust in San Diego.
"The door is still open," the source said. "There's
definitely interest there."
Two sources told The Dallas Morning News in Tuesday's editions
that the Cowboys contacted Tampa Bay about the possibility of
acquiring Leaf in a trade. The Bucs acquired Leaf two weeks ago
when he was released by San Diego.
Leaf's agent, Leigh Steinberg, on Tuesday did not return a
telephone call to The Associated Press. Leaf's contract calls for him to earn $1.5 million this season.
The Cowboys were believed to be offering one of several players
for Tampa Bay to choose from. It said none had major roles with the
team last year.
Dallas is believed to be offering one of several players for Tampa Bay to choose from, though none played significant roles with Dallas last season.
Some players who fit that category are defensive linemen Noel Scarlett and Bryant Shaw, linebacker Israel Ifeanyichukwu and receivers Rocky Henry and Marcus Stiggers.
Last week, team vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys, who have $23.4 million counting against their cap for players no longer on their team, have enough cap room to sign their draft choices and make a move for a veteran, if needed, without having to cut additional players.
Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
