Fan votes count as one-third of final vote

NEW YORK -- Wide receiver Randy Moss and quarterback Daunte Culpepper of the Minnesota Vikings are clearly the people's choice.

Moss and Culpepper finished as the top two vote-getters in the Pro Bowl fan balloting, the NFL announced Monday. Moss received 210,493 votes and Culpepper, who is in his first year as a starter, collected 207,011 votes for the NFC squad.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning led all AFC players with 187,412 votes. He was the highest vote-getter in fan balloting for the 2000 Pro Bowl with 124,346.

Fan balloting counts for one-third of the final vote in determining the Pro Bowl rosters that will be announced on Thursday.

NFL players and coaches each count for one-third of the final vote and must cast their ballots by Tuesday. The NFL is the only league that combines voting by fans, players and coaches to determine its all-star teams.

The fans' portion of the voting will be used to break ties in case of deadlocks.

The Tennessee Titans topped all AFC teams with six players -- running back Eddie George, fullback Lorenzo Neal, guard Bruce Matthews, defensive end Jevon Kearse, safety Blaine Bishop and kick returner Derrick Mason.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished atop NFC fan balloting with six players -- defensive tackle Warren Sapp, linebacker Derrick Brooks, safety John Lynch, fullback Mike Alstott, guard Randall McDaniel and center Jeff Christy.

The defending champion St. Louis Rams had four representatives -- running back Marshall Faulk, tackle Orlando Pace, inside linebacker London Fletcher and special teams standout Az-Zahir Hakim -- and the Washington Redskins placed three -- defensive end Bruce Smith, cornerback Champ Bailey and safety Mark Carrier -- on the NFC team.

Tight end Wesley Walls of the Carolina Panthers, kicker Gary Anderson and punter Mitch Berger of the Vikings and kick returner Desmond Howard of the Detroit Lions also were named to the NFC team in fan balloting.

Wide receiver Marvin Harrison and kicker Mike Vanderjagt of the Colts joined teammate Manning on the AFC team.

Defensive tackle Darrell Russell and cornerback Charles Woodson of the Oakland Raiders, inside linebacker Zach Thomas and special teams standout Larry Izzo of the Miami Dolphins, linebacker Junior Seau of the San Diego Chargers, safety Rod Woodson of the Baltimore Ravens, tight end Tony Gonzalez of the Kansas City Chiefs, tackle Tony Boselli of the Jacksonville Jaguars and center Dermontti Dawson of the Pittsburgh Steelers were also voted to the AFC team in fan balloting.

The Pro Bowl will be held February 4 at Honolulu.
