| PONTIAC, Mich. -- Bobby Ross issued a statement to Lions owner William Clay Ford,
thanking the organization but shedding no light on his decision to resign Monday.
The following is Ross' statement to Ford:
"After careful thought and deliberation with my wife, I have decided to
resign my position as head football coach of the Detroit Lions effective November 6, 2000.
"I am deeply indebted to you and Bill for the opportunity you gave me and
for the outstanding support you've given me during my time with the Detroit
Lions organization. It is an outstanding organization run by outstanding
people and I was very proud to be a part of it.
"I am sorry, also, for not giving you the championship trophy you so richly
deserved. Your strong support was my constant motivation throughout my time
here.
"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our coaches, players
and support staff for their assistance. Their efforts were outstanding and
most appreciated. Lastly, I would like to thank the many loyal fans of the
Lions. Their show of support throughout was constant.
"Thanks again for the opportunity given me. My wife and I will always have
great memories, not only of the Detroit Lions organization, but also of the
many great people we've met in and outside of the Lions organization. I wish
you, Bill, Chuck Schmidt an all those affiliated with the Lions much success
