| PHILADELPHIA -- Washington Redskins receiver Irving Fryar
was to be hospitalized overnight at a Philadelphia hospital after
injuring his neck and shoulder in the third quarter of Sunday's
game.
Fryar appeared to take a shot to the helmet from safety Tim
Hauck while attempting to block in the Redskins' 17-14 victory over
the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
The 38-year-old receiver slowly walked off the field, then
collapsed on the sideline after the next play -- a missed field-goal
attempt.
The game was stopped for several minutes while medical personnel
attended to Fryar. He left on a stretcher with his neck
immobilized, but he had movement in his arms and legs.
"Irving has a neck and shoulder injury. I don't know how
severe," Washington coach Norv Turner said.
Redskins cornerback Darrell Green led the team in prayer as
several players crowded around Fryar while he lay on the field.
"There's never been a more difficult situation than watching a
player lay flat on the field and trying to stay focused," said
defensive end Bruce Smith.
Fryar, who played three years in Philadelphia before coming out
of retirement to join the Redskins last season, had one reception
for 9 yards.
