Oakley's blood found on one of victims

ATLANTA -- Blood from a defendant in the trial that once included NFL star Ray Lewis was on one of two men stabbed to death after the Super Bowl, a crime scene technician testified Wednesday.

The technician, Dawn Pierce, said that blood from Reginald Oakley was found on the coat Jacinth Baker was wearing when he and Richard Lollar were killed.

Of three bloodstains on the coat, two came from Baker and one was a mixture of blood from Oakley and Baker, she said.

In his opening statement, District Attorney Paul Howard promised jurors evidence of a "blood trail" that would link the defendants to the slayings.

Earlier Wednesday, jurors were shown grisly photographs of the slain men.

The courtroom, packed when Lewis was a defendant, was nearly empty except for family members of Baker and Lollar.

Lewis, a Baltimore Ravens linebacker, pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor obstruction of justice and testified Tuesday against his two former co-defendants, Joseph Sweeting of Miami and Oakley of Baltimore. Lewis was not in court Wednesday.

The medical examiner testified about the photos, which were taken during an autopsy. Prosecutors also called an FBI agent and an Atlanta police officer as witnesses.

Howard did not rest his case Wednesday as expected, and testimony will continue Thursday.

Sweeting and Oakley face charges of murder, felony murder and aggravated assault in the deaths of Baker and Lollar, who were stabbed during a street brawl Jan. 31 after a Super Bowl party in Atlanta's Buckhead entertainment district.

Lewis testified Tuesday that he saw Sweeting and Oakley, friends who were partying with him that night, fight with a group of men that included Baker and Lollar. But he said the brawl was over so quickly he couldn't tell if Sweeting or Oakley stabbed the victims.

The killers "might be on trial and might not be on trial," said Lewis, who received a year's probation for giving police a misleading statement and telling his companions to keep quiet about the fight.
