DENVER -- The tampering issue surrounding Steve Young and
the Denver Broncos is closed.

San Francisco 49ers general manager Bill Walsh said Thursday the
NFL "indicated there is no reason to explore this situation and we
certainly accept their dictates."
On Wednesday, Walsh said the 49ers had been contacted by the NFL
about the Broncos' possibly contacting the quarterback even though
he is still under contract. The NFL prohibits teams from having any
contact with players under contract to another team.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday the league was not watching the Broncos. "There is no Steve Young issue that we are monitoring," Aiello said.
The 49ers issued a news release Thursday, with Walsh saying:
"We feel it was unfortunate we brought the National Football
League into this matter. ... As far as the San Francisco 49ers are
concerned it's a closed matter."
There has been widespread speculation that Denver coach Mike
Shanahan would like to acquire Young, a two-time NFL MVP. Young,
38, has been considering his future in football after a series of
concussions.
49ers officials have said their doctors must clear Young before
he returns to action.
