Ditka, Saints owner to meet Thursday

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mike Ditka said he still hopes to come back as the New Orleans Saints' coach next year and said he will discuss the matter with owner Tom Benson on Thursday.

Ditka indicated in an interview on WWL-AM that the meeting would be held in Pensacola, Fla., where Benson has a home.

"I'm going to Florida. If I have a job, I'm going. If I don't have a job, I'm going," Ditka said after the Saints' 45-13 loss to Carolina. "Then we'll find out what's going to happen after that."

The Saints ended the season Sunday at 3-13. Ditka's three-year record with the Saints is 15-33.

Ditka had indicated after the Saints defeated Dallas on Christmas Eve that he was confident he would return next season. He hedged somewhat Sunday.

"I think I will, but I don't know. I don't control that," Ditka said. "What I said last week I believe. If I'm wrong does that make me a liar?

"Whatever Tom wants to do I understand," Ditka said. "Life goes on and this is not the end of my life or the end of my world."
