SAN DIEGO -- San Diego running back Natrone Means did not play in Sunday's win over Oakland and will also miss the season finale next Sunday at Denver because of knee and ankle injuries that have bothered him since the season opener, Chargers coach Mike Riley told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Saturday.
Means might have offseason surgery on one or both of the injuries. Means, 27, had the worst season of his career, with 277 yards rushing and 2.5 yards per carry in seven games for the Chargers (6-8). Means had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Oct. 25 and was inactive for six straight games. He returned two weeks ago against Seattle and gained 42 yards in 14 carries. Last week at Miami he was held to eight yards in nine attempts. "We want to try to start now getting him healthy and getting a good plan for the offseason," Riley said in Sunday's edition of the Union-Tribune. "He made a good run for a couple of weeks and we thought he was making good progress. But he came back to practice this week almost like he was practicing before he looked healthy against Seattle -- just kind of tentative. He looked sore. I thought, 'Why go through this?'
