INDIANAPOLIS -- Veteran Buffalo running back Thurman Thomas injured his ribs on the first play of Sunday's game with the Indianapolis Colts when he was hit on a pass pattern.
Thomas, 33, was hit hard by Indianapolis cornerback Tyrone Poole while attempting to catch a pass from Doug Flutie. He walked to the sidelines on his own after being checked on the field and was later taken to the dressing room.
Thomas, who made his 158th NFL start, did not return to the game and spent the second half on the sideline in civilian clothes as his team lost to Indianapolis 31-14.
"We were going to start Thurman in the game and a lot of our running game involved Thurman, " Buffalo coach Wade Phillips said.
"We don't know for sure. He got a shot in the ribs obviously," Phillips said. The X-rays were negative, but we are still looking at him."
Without Thomas, the Bills were held to 47 yards rushing on 15 carries. In his career, Thomas has more rushing attempts and rushing yards than any other back against the Colts with 304 rushes for 1,230 yards.
