During the offseason, the New England Patriots retooled their offense to take advantage of Tom Brady's greatest qualities -- three-step drops, quick decisions, accurate passes, short throws and an able mind.

Brady, who has excellent poise and savvy for a young quarterback, has a strong grasp of where his receivers are on the field. Against the Steelers on Monday night, the Patriots will protect him better and allow him to take advantage of his best qualities by letting him get the ball out of his hands quickly.

What I don't think would be helpful for Brady and the Patriots would be if he took Drew Bledsoe-like seven-step drops, threw longer routes and allowed plays to develop downfield. Focusing on efficiency will enhance Brady's chances for success, even though the Patriots were only 2-for-11 on third-down conversions against the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI.

Before Brady got hurt in last year's AFC championship game against Pittsburgh, the Patriots' offense played close to the vest. He completed 12 of 18 passes for 115 yards. Expect the Patriots to take the same approach, asking Brady to be careful, to not make mistakes and to execute the team's conservative game plan.

If the Patriots can manage a running game with Antowain Smith, Brady's opportunities to be efficient will improve. Brady's key will be to avoid interceptions, to not force things to happen and to work within Charlie Weis' system, something Brady has proved more than capable of doing.
