Saints reach agreement with TE Rasby

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Continuing to bolster a position of need, the New Orleans Saints have reached a contract agreement with veteran tight end Walter Rasby, an unrestricted free agent who spent the last two seasons with the Washington Redskins.

Rasby, 30, is the second free agent tight end acquired by the Saints in the past few weeks, joining former St. Louis Rams starter Ernie Conwell. Contract details of the Rasby deal, which is agreed to but not yet signed, were not yet available.

The addition of Rasby, whose NFL resume includes 54 starts, provides New Orleans a proven blocker at the position. Conwell is more noted as a receiver and, since the Saints like to use a variety of two-tight end alignments, Rasby is a nice complement.

By acquiring Rasby, the Saints now have four tight ends on the roster, counting David Sloan and Boo Williams. It is likely all four will go to training camp, but Sloan is still rehabilitating from offseason toe surgery, and there have been some rumors Williams has been mentioned in some trade talks.

New Orleans will be the fifth different franchise with which Rasby has played. The nine-year veteran began his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted college free agent in 1994. He has also played with Carolina (1995-97), Detroit (1998-2000) and Washington (2001-2002).

He started 20 games in two seasons with the Redskins but the team made little effort to re-sign him this offseason.

In 118 career appearances, Rasby has 52 receptions for 470 yards and five touchdowns. He started nine times in 2002 and posted eight catches for 78 yards.
