Dyson Panthers' latest acquisition at receiver

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

The Carolina Panthers have bolstered their wide receiver corps for the second time in less than a week by reaching a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent Kevin Dyson, ESPN.com has learned.

Contract terms were not immediately available.

Carolina signed standout slot receiver Ricky Proehl from the St. Louis Rams last weekend and, coupled with the addition of five-year veteran Dyson, the franchise has upgraded a passing game that ranked 30th last season.

The Panthers also might have a new starting quarterback as free agent signee Jake Delhomme prepares to battle incumbent Rodney Peete for the job.

Dyson, 27, chose the Panthers' offers over several others, among them one from the Washington Redskins. Dyson, who has played his entire career with the Tennessee Titans, also drew interest from Buffalo and the New York Jets.

The Panthers consider Dyson, regarded as a legitimate deep threat when healthy, as a starter. They went after him hard even after adding Proehl, and there is a chance, given their recent acquisitions, that the Panthers could attempt to restructure veteran receiver Muhsin Muhammad's contract. Muhammad has a high cap charge and a diminishing impact in Carolina's offense.

A former Utah star, Dyson was the Titans' first-round choice in the 1998 draft and was actually selected ahead of Randy Moss in that year's lottery. He has started 54 of 58 games and has 176 receptions for 2,310 yards and 28 touchdowns. He had 41 catches for 460 yards and four touchdowns last season.
